Public lighting project has the following goals:
1) the safety of pedestrians and vehicular traffic;
2) the reduction of light pollution;
3) energy saving;
4) the improvement of the quality of life and of the conditions of use of urban centers and environmental, monumental and architectural assets;
5) the elimination of disturbances caused by projectors and headlights that individuals have placed in proximity of shop windows;
6) the optimization of operational and maintenance costs;
7) the visibility and viability of the city during the evening and at night without changing its heart, that is bearing in mind that each architecture is linked to its context, its colors, its lights, but also to the hierarchy of places with shadows and dim light.
The aim is to enjoy squares, streets and monuments as places of encounter and of personal and cultural growth. Lighting that interprets present times while respecting and celebrating the past. We tried not to invade the streets and buildings of light but to modulate the light and darkness by emphasizing the perception of the glimpses and of the roads’ twine into a harmonious interplay of volumes. On the other hand, the parameters of technical efficiency have been taken into account as compositional aspects of the project by choosing lights and shadows lighting in order to suggest and transmit emotions. As for the selection of equipment, it followed a morphological and chromatic congruity to respect the already existing ones. Even the points of installation of projectors were chosen so that they would appear concealed from view from the main axis of observation and the surrounding buildings have been used as natural supports to avoid the pole stands as much as possible. Besides making walking safe and comfortable, in this project the light was used to enhance the meaning of the architectural space, its structure and paths, thus trying to redevelop the site. The light takes on an increasingly important role in the identity of a city center itself and in the residents’ lives. It helps to create atmosphere and comfort and to make the city alive. A city with good lighting promotes itself. To create a good lighting system is an opportunity to lay the foundations for a redevelopment of tourism. This leads to an extension of the usability of urban spaces thus contributing to a higher quality of life.
Maintenance’s simplicity and safety
Special attention has been paid to the use of colour and its endless shades as an added value. In the project we tried to use a specific color and not any color to communicate a specific emotion, keeping in mind some of the reactions that are considered universal by individuals. Two types of lamps have been used: high pressure sodium vapor lamps were chosen for functional lighting to exploit the color temperature of 2000 ° Kelvin and make the atmosphere warm and welcoming. In particular we took advantage of the fact that warm color light tends to soften and to mask more effectively any blemishes or defects in the facades of buildings. The choice of this type of light source perfectly matches the decision to maximize the presence of a flow controller. Metal halide lamps, whose light is cooler due to their white blue component, were chosen for accent lighting. They bring out the details and make what is illuminated clearly visible from far away; the intention is to emphasize the presence of some buildings or elements that remain hidden during daylight hours . As described in the introduction, the checking up of existing lanterns showed the inability to modify them to fit the new regulations. Moreover, it would not have been possible, due to their artisan craftsmanship, to provide the required certifications and structural inspections. In order to standardize the type and color of the light and allow considerable energy saving, we suggested the replacement of current lanterns craft with new generation ones equipped with optical to improve the quality of emissions and characterized by beyond 90 ° shielding against light pollution and by IP 43/44 . The functional plant will employ high pressure sodium lamps as recommended by Tuscany Regional Law n.39 of 24.02.2005. This choice is justified by the search for uniformity and by the possibility to bring out architectural and artistic subjects through the Sodium – Iodide contrast.
Point-to-point remote control system
Installation will be supported by a point-to-point remote control system with dimmable electronic ballast that allows a multi-step fragmentation at night or when necessary, the management of different scenarios, scheduled maintenance through remote control of the internal components of each single device. The remote control also allows the monitoring of the consumption and operating hours of the individual device / system, allowing the organization of maintenance cycles. The installation of a remote control system will indeed need a revision and maybe a wiring replacement in the present facilities with a reorganization in many parts of the city. The remote controlled system certainly implies a higher installation cost compared to a more elementary, automatic bi-power one, but in the course of time it will grant energy saving in both management and maintenance terms. Remote control devices are manufactured by specialized companies which will need to be involved in the executive planning phase given the countless opportunities the market offers.
Under eave projectors
The current system has a wide variety of under eave projectors that differ in both their aesthetic and functionality. It will be necessary to establish which current equipment has characteristics that justify its replacement with more modern, high-performance ones meeting the design requirements. The architectural structure will allow certain subjects to come out of the uniformity of the functional system so as to enhance forms, materials and colors. This effect can be achieved with the metal halide lighting which allow the visibility of peculiar colors and details. It will be necessary to analyze carefully each subject that has to be illuminated focusing into historical investigations. It will also be essential to provide some monuments (ie Towers and Steeples) with two options: one for every day of the year which highlights the skyline of Arezzo and one for special occasions which allows a broader view. This system also can benefit from a point to point remote control system which allows the control and management of devices and programmable switches. The combination of the two solutions and the overall enhancement of the system will create perfect conditions for the elimination of all light sources outside the shop windows, which is essential to limit the visual pollution, clean up the facades, enhance the environment. Furthermore, major emphasis will be put on the windows themselves by turning them into real light scenic designs.
