The public lighting system in Arezzo’s historic district shows several heterogeneity and discontinuity marks in light fixtures’ models, colour and intensity of light and its progressive and widespread degradation . The presence non homogeneous equipment is the result of a fragmented and careless management. No attention has been paid to energy saving, environmental insertion of devices and ultimately to the potentiality of lighting in the enjoyment, enhancement and promotion of the historic center. All of this- in addition to creating a blurred and not very reassuring atmosphere - contributes to a confused and disordered image of the city. The color temperatures of the lanterns might vary along the same roadway without apparent reasons. This distracts attention from some architectural features and perspective views, and it isn’t indeed a proper guide to the story of the city. The widespread deterioration state of light fixtures (many glass lanterns or methacrylate balls are broken or completely obscured), reduces considerably the lamp power and luminous flux thus accelerating the device’s degradation. The analysis of current conditions has been achieved in three months by two teams of detectors that have verified the location of luminaires, their model, the luminous flux , the state of deterioration and possible new locations. At the same time, the possibility to re- adjust the Arezzo lantern has been carried forward by adapting to the new rules of the Regione Toscana, through a systematic set of interventions aimed at adapting to the norms and lighting requirements.
